IB schools are educational institutions that have been accredited by the IB Board. They offer a globally recognized, holistic curriculum. Upon completing schooling, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is awarded to students. The IB Diploma was created in Switzerland and is now available in over 143 countries across the world. In India, there are IB schools in Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, and other major cities. Read on to learn more about the types of IB schools and the IB curriculum.
Types of IB Schools
IB schools could be of many types. Some are day schools only, while others are residential programs. Some schools may be 100 percent IB, while many IB schools in Chennai have a CBSE or ICSE/IGCSE Board affiliation as well. This gives students the flexibility to opt for an IB program at various stages in their schooling. Only the IB elementary program does not permit a mixed student population. Hence, the choice is up to the student. They could take just one IB course for credits or the IB Diploma program. They could leave the program if it does not suit them or take it up at a later stage in their schooling.
IB Curriculum
Inquiry-Based Approach
The IB program has a different approach to learning than what we are familiar with. The core of this curriculum is an inquiry-based approach. Every lesson or activity is geared towards understanding the “why” of it. For instance, students learn why sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis in plants- because it gives the energy to activate chlorophyll and make chemical changes- versus just rote learning that plants need sunlight and water to create food for themselves. Students are also encouraged to ask questions and think critically about everything. Most lessons are discussion-based and led by posing questions to the class.
Focus on STEM
The IB program also focuses on integrating STEM education, which is application-based learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM courses are widely accepted as the fundamentals for a future-ready workforce.
Emphasis on Personal Development
The IB program gives great emphasis on inculcating values and mindsets to make its students ethical and responsible citizens of the world. Personal qualities like being independent, taking the initiative, and self-discipline are encouraged. Students learn how to work on projects and presentation skills by creating and presenting their work to the class.
IB schools also lay equal importance on arts in education and sports. Students have the opportunity to discover and hone their innate talents. These activities also play a role in building life skills and values like teamwork and empathy.
Is the IB Program For Your Child?
The IB program is a rigorous course, but if your child is inquisitive, creative, and enjoys challenges, it could be a good fit for you. IB schools in Chennai provide a dynamic environment for the all-round development of your child. An IB education gives your child an edge over others in the ever-changing global landscape of today.
